The UNC system school offers a challenging curriculum, a nationally accredited business school, and one of the best marine biology schools in the country. Cape Fear Memorial Hospital is a 142-bed, private, not-for-profit, acute care hospital. The community hospital was founded in 1957 by three local physicians. Today the Hospital has a staff of 200 specialists and general practice physicians, and serves a variety of health care needs. New Hanover Regional Medical Center is a 568-bed, not-for-profit, publicly-owned referral hospital. It operates as Southeastern North Carolina’s Regional Trauma Center. As the Regional Trauma Center, New Hanover is equipped to handle the most serious injuries. VitaLink, a mobile, intensive care unit, is available to transport patients to the hospital 24 hours a day. Since its doors opened in 1967, the institution has expanded its medical services to include specialized areas such as psychiatry, rehabilitation and geriatric services.
New Hanover County Schools are recognized as among the best in North Carolina and a leading advocate of new initiatives to improve the learning experience of its students. Of particular note is the system’s participation in a voluntary year-round school pilot project, Total Quality Education, and Genesis Information Highway. Additionally there is remarkable success in programs to involve the community in the educationally process and in ensuring that children enter school prepared to learn and remain in school through graduation.
